Warshaw Burstein, LLP wishes to note, with great sadness, the passing of our partner and longtime colleague and friend, Jack Kannry, who died on September 9, 2024.

Jack was both an attorney and licensed professional engineer with more than 40 years of construction industry experience. He concentrated in construction and environmental law and litigation, representing owners, contractors, construction managers, engineers, architects and governmental authorities in public and private sector matters in New York, and in other regional and national jurisdictions. His practice encompassed construction and environmental claims prosecution and defense through trial, arbitration, mediation, administrative boards and appeals; architect and engineer liability suits; contracts development and negotiations; and business counseling during the planning, design, funding, bidding and construction phases of heavy building projects.

Jack served as the Chair of the firm’s Construction Department since his arrival in 2007. Prior to joining the firm, he had a varied and successful career, including as Managing Partner and Senior Litigation Partner at Berman, Paley, Goldstein & Kannry, LLP. Before that, he had a distinguished career in government service, serving in various positions with the City of New York, the New York Power Authority, the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York and City University of New York. He was proud of having served before he became an attorney as a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Reserve Officer (First Lieutenant, Construction Platoon Leader) – construction projects supervision for engineer construction battalion at Fort Bragg, North Carolina and the adjacent Pope Air Force Base.

Jack was an active member of many professional organizations, including the General Contractors Association of New York and The Moles, and looked forward to their yearly golf outings and dinners.

A graduate of City College of New York, School of Technology, he received various graduate degrees in engineering from New York University, College of Engineering. He received his J.D. from Fordham University, School of Law.

Always the gentleman,  Jack’s knowledge of the law and sound advice earned him the respect of his clients and colleagues.

He will be missed by all of us. We wish Jack’s wife, Joyce, and his son, Joseph, comfort and peace.
