Sarah A. Steckler, Scott Nussbaum, John Charles Thomas and David Stark Facilitate the Acquisition of Alfred Leslie Pieces to The Butler Institute of American Art
04/10/2025New York – April 10, 2025 – Sarah A. Steckler, partner in the Trusts and Estates Group, worked with Scott Nussbaum, Deputy Chairman, Senior International Specialist of Phillips, John Charles Thomas of Stout Thomas & Johnson, and David Stark, Executor of the Estate of Alfred Leslie, to facilitate the acquisition of several of the late artist’s works by The Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio.
The Estate of Alfred Leslie gifted Alfred Leslie’s realist masterpiece Americans: Youngstown, Ohio to The Butler as part of the permanent collection. The artist had sent this large oil painting of Youngstown people back to the museum in 2017 to hang next to another Alfred Leslie early abstraction High Tea which was recently purchased by the museum for $300,000.
Ms. Steckler advised that Mr. Leslie in his Last Will and Testament directed that his estate preserve and enhance his artistic legacy by electing to donate works to museums, educational institutions, or other charitable institutions. The gift of Americans: Youngstown, Ohio helps to fulfill the artists wish.
Mr. Nussbaum has also facilitated the highly successful sale at auction of select early abstraction Leslie works on behalf of the estate. Alfred Leslie was an American painter and filmmaker. He first achieved success as an Abstract Expressionist painter but changed course in the early 1960s and became a painter of realistic figurative paintings.
