David Jacobson Presides Over Moot Court In NYU School of Law Immigration Law Competition
02/07/2023Warshaw Burstein today announced that David Jacobson, Partner and Chair of the Immigration Group, served as a Judge on February 4, 2023, in a moot court setting in the prestigious New York University School of Law National Immigration Law Competition.
Started in 2006, NYU’s National Immigration Law Competition (ILC) is the NYU Moot Court Board’s annual external moot court competition. The ILC focuses on cutting-edge issues in the field of immigration law and is judged by panels of distinguished NYU alumni and legal practitioners from throughout New York. The final round is judged by federal appellate and district court judges.
This year, NYU School of Law hosted 28 student teams from law schools across the country at the 18th Annual Immigration Law Competition from February 3-5, 2023. The case that was argued this year involved unsettled legal issues in the field including whether misprision of a felony is a “crime involving moral turpitude” (which, if found, makes a foreign national deportable (“removable”) from the U.S.); and whether a foreign national improperly denied counsel in immigration removal proceedings must demonstrate that the denial resulted in prejudice in order to state a due process claim. Mr. Jacobson relied upon his vast experience in immigration law practice, including his prior experience in arguing cases before the U.S. Immigration Courts, to lend his knowledge and reasoned judgment to the proceedings. He also provided valuable feedback to the contestants upon the conclusion of the oral arguments over which he presided. The Final Arguments were subsequently presided over by Hon. Adalberto Jordan of the Eleventh Circuit, Hon. Gabriel Sanchez of the Ninth Circuit, and Hon. Eric Komitee of the Eastern District of New York.
