Back to School: What Every Parent Should Know

08/30/2023
  • Ensure your child reviews the student handbook
  • Inform them about Title IX regulations, and what "consent" means
  • If your child is a victim of sexual harassment, they should contact the Title IX coordinator to file a formal complaint (if college-aged) or any school employee (if in grades K-12)
  • Consider a Health Care Proxy if you would like to speak with your college student’s health care providers or obtain copies of their medical records if your child is 18 or older. Also check with your child’s school if they have their own internal forms
  • Remind your child that everything that they put on social media is retrievable — even on SnapChat
  • Encourage your child to save all electronic communications because they may need them later
